We proudly announce that Shelly Capps is our 2023-2024 Teacher of the Year at Orchard Elementary School.
Shelly is not only generous and kind, but she also possesses an energetic approach to teaching that is contagious. Her passion for learning is evident in every lesson she delivers, and her enthusiasm inspires her students to become active participants in their education. She goes above and beyond to create a stimulating and engaging learning environment where students feel motivated and excited to learn.
What sets her apart is her natural ability to connect with her students. She is a natural-born educator genuinely interested in their well-being and success. She takes the time to understand each student's strengths, weaknesses, and individual needs, tailoring her teaching methods accordingly. Her compassionate nature extends beyond the classroom, as she actively engages with her scholars' families, ensuring a solid support system for her students.
Shelly is an exceptional teacher and a role model for her students. Her military background has instilled in her a sense of discipline, resilience, and dedication, which she imparts to her students at Orchard and the Adult School, where she has taught for 31 years. Shelly teaches them the importance of hard work, perseverance, and the value of education in shaping their future.
When her students were asked what makes Shelly such a great teacher, they shared that they appreciate that she greets them at the door every morning. This creates a sense of comfort and trust in the classroom, allowing students to feel safe to ask questions and seek help when needed. The students also mentioned that she does fun projects with them.
She embodies the qualities of a true educator and is an inspiration to both her students and colleagues.
