Hoot Hoot Orchard Owl Families!!!!

Welcome to the information spot for the Orchard Elementary Library, I love being involved with your child and seeing them become bookworms like myself. I am an avid reader outside of school and pride myself on being able to recommend a book to any age group, kinder through adult, and welcome any book recommendations from students. My goal for the school year is to provide students with a safe and warm environment to feel confident and comfortable to gain knowledge, skills and frame of mind for learning. I feel that reading is the path to be successful with school.

The Orchard Library is a bright, open and inviting space that includes a small bank of computers for AR (Accelerated Reader) testing, and an entertaining place for students to feel inspired to read. Statistics show that a child that reads or is read to 15 - 20 minutes a day is more apt to have a love of reading, helps with language development, brain development, and strengthens family relationships. I encourage students to read AR books in their range and test, once they read the grade appropriate number of words are they recognized by joining the Millionaire Club. In the 2018/19 we added the staff to this friendly competition and our school read over $150M words!!!!!

Fundraising and Novel Knowledge are the two main sources for new books in our Library. The Scholastic Book fair in the Fall and a new book fair affiliate, Usborne Book company, for our spring book fair, in the upcoming 2019/20 school year. Novel Knowledge is a Reading Enrichment Program that challenges students in grades 4-6 across VUSD's ten elementary schools to read and reread eight pre-selected titles. Students collaborate and complete a series of written questions from each title over several days at their school sites in teams of three or four. The #1 team from each site is invited to the District Championship each year in early May. Volunteers are always needed for these events as well as on a daily basis. Orchard Owls have a love for reading and there are always books that need to be shelved! I welcome any parent, grandparent, family member or friend to come in and observe our Library time, you may even be asked to read the daily book to the class!

Happy Reading!!!
